A student of class XI was hit by the absurdity of a statement made by an elderly acquaintance that, “Today, a man has no value in the corporate world without a postgraduate degree, and if you can boast of an engineering and an MBA degree there’s nothing to stop you.” Today, four years later as she enrolls for a course in the hope to clear the highly respected and most dreaded CAT in a little over 6 months from now the same thought echoes in her head. But there’s a slight difference as now she understands that what the man said wasn’t baseless.
The Indian Corporate world has been dominated by MBA graduates with an engineering background for the past 50 years. Some of the prominent faces are M.S. Banga, Chairman of Hindustan Lever Limited, Nandan Nilekani, CEO of Infosys, or Victor Menezes, Chairman and CEO, Citibank. A recent study indicated that no less than 60% of the countries CEO come from this background and their brilliance and ability to lead needs no proof. The ability of engineers to grasp knowledge and implement it in the most appropriate way possible is what makes them potential managers or CEOs. Testimonial to this fact is the stupendous success that students of NSIT have seen in, undoubtedly, one of the most difficult exams in India like the CAT with 2 students achieving a 100 percentile and 6 students getting a call from 6 IIMs. It’s hard to believe that 4 students, Debanjan Dey, Vaibhav Dua, Rahul Bagaria and Nishant, studying in the same class in NSIT, a premier institute for engineering, for four years have made it to IIM Ahmedabad, the finest institute in the country for management courses and will continue their journey together. Companies such as
Google, Microsoft, and Adobe are flocked by students of NSIT and institutes such as IIM, XLRI and FMS are no different, with this year’s result matching that of any of the previous years.
CALLS:
With over 247 calls in all, 80 students were called for interviews in various IIMs.
CALL COVERTED:
37 students (and still counting) have made it to different IIMs. The total number of calls is over 75.
Students have made it to coveted institutes such as XLRI and FMS in similar numbers.
